Waiting for the Rain is een tijdloos conceptalbum over opgroeien. Niet uniek in zijn thematiek maar zeer avontuurlijk in zijn vorm. Tom Bruins’ debuutalbum is alles van singer-songwriter tot barokpop en prog-rock in één. Met mysterieuze harmoniumklanken wordt de luisteraar bij de openingstrack de songcyclus ingezogen. Het gebruik van dit instrument geeft de plaat meteen iets aantrekkelijk archaïsch.

Tom Bruins debuutalbum is geschreven voor vinyl, dus met een kant A en een kant B. Die ‘beperking’ van een lp met z’n twee kanten is bewust gekozen om z’n speelse vorm. De nummers zijn zorgvuldig in de juiste volgorde gelegd en laten zich als één geheel beluisteren. Het album werd in de SSE-studio in Amsterdam-Noord op de plaat gezet met producers Frans Hagenaars en Yorick van Norden.

Wie zich een beeld wil vormen wat een songcyclus nou precies is, heeft misschien het meest aan een paar pakkende voorbeelden uit de pophistorie: The Beach Boys’ SMiLE en Van Dyke Parks’ Song Cycle. Ook is de invloed van platen als Harry Nilsson’s Aerial Ballet, Genesis’ Selling England by the Pound en Randy Newman’s debuutalbum terug te horen op Waiting for the Rain. Bruins hoopt in 2025 met zijn songcyclus deze kunstvorm nieuw leven in te blazen.

Die verhalende nummers van Nilsson en Newman beschouwt Bruins als de ultieme popliedjes, en hij bedient zich dus ook graag van de verhalende vorm. Verder is de geest van Cole Porter, een van de belangrijkste scheppende krachten achter The Great American Songbook alomtegenwoordig en heeft de kleinkunst van Maarten van Roozendaal ook zijn uitwerking niet gemist op Bruins. Waiting for the Rain is alles van singer-songwriter tot barokpop en prog-rock in één. Heel bijzonder én aanlokkelijk gebracht.

In zijn muziek legt Bruins de nadruk op de menselijke fixatie door de onzinnigheden van het dagelijks leven, en de vaak onbegrijpelijke wijze waarop men hierover met elkaar en zichzelf communiceert. Zijn inspiratie haalt hij veelal uit literatuur en film, en hij is dan ook erg geïnteresseerd in het effect, en de rol van fictieve personages in popliedjes; in hoeverre deze daadwerkelijk fictief zijn.

Op Waiting for the Rain komen er vier vertellers aan het woord: de kleuter, het schoolkind, de puber en de adolescent. We kijken door het raam naar binnen en zien telkens hoe een verteller zich door een bepaalde levensfase heen worstelt. Deze vertellers vallen niet samen met de maker ervan. Daarin verschilt Bruins werkwijze met die van singer-songwriters die autobiografische teksten schrijven.

Waiting for the Rain

Waiting for the Rain is a timeless concept album about growing up. Not unique in its theme, but highly adventurous in its form. Tom Bruins’ debut album is everything from singer-songwriter to baroque pop and prog rock in one. With mysterious harmonium sounds, the opening track draws the listener straight into the song cycle. The use of this instrument immediately lends the record an appealingly archaic quality.

Tom Bruins’ debut album was written for vinyl, with a Side A and a Side B. This “limitation” of an LP with its two sides was deliberately chosen for its playful structure. The songs are carefully sequenced and can be experienced as a single whole. The album was recorded at the SSE Studio in Amsterdam-Noord with producers Frans Hagenaars and Yorick van Norden.

In his music, Bruins highlights the human fixation on the absurdities of everyday life and the often incomprehensible ways in which people communicate about them with each other and with themselves. Much of his inspiration comes from literature and film, and he is fascinated by the effect and role of fictional characters in pop songs—and to what extent these characters are truly fictional.

Waiting for the Rain features four narrators: the toddler, the schoolchild, the teenager, and the young adult. We peer through the window and watch each narrator struggle through a particular stage of life. These narrators do not coincide with the maker himself. In this way, Bruins’ approach differs from that of singer-songwriters who write autobiographical lyrics.
